Heiting Reaches 100 Career Points as Union Rolls Past Bard

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Grace Heiting recorded a game-high seven points, including the 100th point of her career in the second quarter, as the Union College women's lacrosse team rolled to a 20-4 victory over Bard College in Liberty League action on Wednesday night at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Heiting had another big day for the Dutchwomen, scoring five goals with two assists to go with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Her fifth and final goal came with 10:45 left in the second stanza and gave her 100 points for her career, making her just the 22nd player in program history to reach the century mark. The senior is averaging 2.73 points per game for her career, with 65 goals and 36 assists in only 37 games.

Junior Dana Truini and sophomore Anna Smith added four points apiece, with Truini scoring four times and Smith chipping in two goals and two assists. First-year Sarah Murphy netted a season-best three goals while juniors Katie Julien and Elena Gerrato scored twice each as well.

The win was a big one for Union (5-9, 4-5 Liberty League), as the team moves into a tie for sixth place in the conference standings with one game left. A Union victory in Saturday's Senior Day matchup against the University of Rochester would assure the Dutchwomen a postseason berth for the second straight season.

Two early goals by Heiting and Truini were matched by Bard's Izzi Popolizio and Sarah Child, forcing a Union timeout 4:01 into the contest. The break seemed to wake up the home team, as Union rattled off six straight goals to end the first quarter and five more to start the second stanza, taking a 13-2 lead with 7:24 on the clock. Heiting scored four times in a five-goal span for Union midway through the run, including her history-making point.

After Bard scored twice later in the frame to finally end the run, Murphy capped the half with two goals in the final 91 seconds, including one on the doorstep just before time expired that gave Union a 15-4 lead at the break.

The Dutchwomen controlled the final two periods as well, outscoring the Raptors 5-0 to further extend the lead.

Union finished the evening outshooting Bard 46-11 while limiting Bard to 7-of-16 on clearing attempts and corralling 33 ground balls to Bard's 12. Sophomore Hannah Dubinsky made three saves in the first half to earn the win, while senior Jenna Paszek stopped all four shots she faced in the second half.

Union will look to lock up a postseason berth on Saturday at 2 p.m., when the Dutchwomen honor their graduating seniors before a conference clash with Rochester.
