Union Knocks Off Ithaca 5-4 for Big Conference Win

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Cameron Klepper won the decisive match at sixth singles to pick up his second win of the day and lift the Union College men's tennis team to a huge 5-4 victory over Ithaca College in Liberty League action on Sunday afternoon at Glazer Arena.

Five different players recorded at least one victory on the day for Union (4-5, 2-1 Liberty League), led by Klepper and sophomore Dimitris Binopoulos with two victories apiece. Senior Ioannis Binopoulos and sophomore Bailey McAtee joined the tandem in their doubles wins, while first-year Ben Jacobs also saved a match point on the way to a crucial singles win as well for the Dutchmen.

The visitors started the day well by capturing the first two doubles points. The Binopoulos brothers started off with an 8-2 win over Minos Stavrakas and Jacob Wachs at second doubles, followed by Klepper and McAtee's 8-6 third-doubles victory over Arten Khaybullin and Nicholas Luis.

Taking a 2-1 lead into singles play, the younger Binopoulos completed his perfect day with an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Deon Kraft at fourth singles. Losses at third and first singles evened the match at three, but Jacobs came up huge at second singles, recovering from a tough second set to outlast Stavrakas in a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 victory. The first-year faced a match point at 4-5 in the third set before recovering to pull even and eventually earn a huge break to secure the win and put the visitors one point from a victory.

Junior Thomas McGuire could not close it out at fifth singles, which left it up to Klepper at sixth singles. The senior gutted out a 7-5 first-set win over Wachs before taking control early in the second set, cruising to a 6-2 win and giving the Dutchmen a big conference victory.

The Dutchmen will step out of conference to take on Hamilton College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Clinton, N.Y.
