MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Union College baseball team (7-10, 2-4 Liberty League) gave up four runs in the eighth inning to fall, 7-5, to Middlebury College (9-7, 1-1 NESCAC) on Wednesday at Forbes Field.
Senior
Jack DiNanno went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Sophomore
Thomas Parisi was 1-for-3 with a key triple and two RBIs.
Union took a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza, scoring off an RBI-single from DiNanno. The Panthers tied the game at the bottom of inning from a sac fly.
In the top of the second inning, sophomore
Anthony Ruzzo walked and classmate
Sebastian Pike singled to center to put runners on first and second. Sophomore
Thomas Parisi lined his second career triple into left center field and classmate
Kobe Mentzer singled in the next at-bat to give Union a 4-1 lead.
Middlebury cut into Union's lead with a run in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-2 game.
Junior
Jono Santos led off the fifth inning with a walk. DiNanno dropped a single into right field one batter later before senior
Justin Cabanas grounded into a double play, giving Santos time to scamper home and give Union a 5-2 lead. The Panthers tacked on another run in the sixth to cut the lead to two.
Middlebury's bats came alive in the eighth, scoring four runs to take a 7-5 lead and the eventual victory.
Junior
Harry Azadian pitched five innings, striking out six, and surrendered three runs, only one earned, on six hits. Sophomore
Kyle Patlove (0-1) takes the loss for the Dutchmen, allowing three runs on three hits, and fanning two in 1.1 innings of work.
Union returns to conference play this weekend with a trip to Vassar College on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Prentiss Baseball Field.
