ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Despite holding #4/3 Rochester Institute of Technology off the scoreboard for the entirety of the fourth quarter, #3/4 Union College could only muster two fourth-quarter tallies to suffer their first loss of the season, 14-13, in a Liberty League men's lacrosse matchup on Saturday afternoon at the RIT Turf Field.
Keaton McCann recorded a game-high five goals to lead Union (10-1, 2-1 Liberty League), which had its program-record-tying 10-game winning streak come to an end with the loss. Marley Angus registered a game-high six points on four goals and two assists for RIT (10-1, 2-1 Liberty League).
Union started the afternoon with the first two tallies, getting a goal from sophomore
Peter Kip on the opening possession and then McCann's first of the day with 10:05 on the clock. RIT responded with the largest streak of the day for either side, a four-goal stretch that put the home team up by two with 2:34 left, before the Dutchmen came back with goals from seniors
Hayden Frey and
Matthew Georgiades to knot the score at four after 15 minutes.
Eight more goals were scored in the second quarter, with RIT posting a 5-3 edge to take a lead into halftime. After the teams traded goals to start the period, Angus and Quinn Commandant scored 1:14 apart to put RIT up 7-5, which turned out to be the last lead change of the day. Goals by McCann and sophomore
Zach Davis helped the deficit remain at two headed into halftime.
The Tigers built up the largest lead of the game with three of the first four goals of the third period, taking a 12-8 lead with 6:02 left. Seniors
Brian Davis and
Kieran McGovern scored 49 seconds apart to get Union back within two, but penalties killed the visitors as two man-up tallies returned RIT's four-goal edge with 1:25 left in the third before the elder Davis got one back before the horn.
The Union defense did all they could to keep the team in the game in the fourth quarter, holding the Tigers scoreless by forcing six turnovers and getting three saves from sophomore
Dan Donahue. Senior
Jack Donahue made it a 14-12 game with 11:58 left; however, turnovers on the next five possessions killed the team's momentum. McCann made it a one-goal game with his fifth of the day with 5:00 on the clock, but the Dutchmen managed only one on-target shot the rest of the game.
The Dutchmen had a strong day at the X, with sophomore
Matthew Paolatto (14 of 17) and senior
Sam Byrne (7 of 13) combining to win 21-of-30 draws. But RIT took advantage of Union's penalties, scoring three times on five man-up chances, with the 3-2 edge in extra-man goals helping to provide the one-goal difference.
Union will look to regroup next Saturday when the team continues its challenging Liberty League slate at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 1 p.m.
