Heiting and Dubinsky Lead Union to Key Conference Win, 18-8

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Grace Heiting set new career highs with seven goals and nine points while sophomore Hannah Dubinsky made nine saves to lead the Union College women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 victory over Clarkson University in a Liberty League matchup on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Heiting had a monster game for Union (3-6, 2-3 Liberty League), setting new career highs in nearly every category. The senior scored seven goals on nine shots and assisted on two more, while also controlling 10 draws, causing seven turnovers and grabbing four ground balls. The nine points are the most in a game by a Union player since Maggie Comiskey '16 had 10 against Vassar College on April 29, 2016, while her goal and caused turnover totals are tied for the most by Dutchwoman in a game since single-game records are available in 2004.

In addition to Heiting, sophomore Anna Smith netted a career-high four goals and junior Katie Julien matched her career-best with three goals and four points.

Led by Heiting's defense, Union did an excellent job defending Clarkson clearing attempts on the day, holding the Golden Knights to a 50 percent (11 of 22) success rate and 20 turnovers overall. When the shots did get through, Dubinsky made a career-best nine saves on 17 attempts to go the full 60:00 for the first time in her career.

Union dominated all facets of the game in the first quarter, outscoring Clarkson 7-1 to take control early. Junior Drew Charlton opened the scoring from first-year Greta Maurer before the visitors evened the score on the next possession. But Union (and Heiting) took over from there, as the senior scored four times and added an assist as part of a 6-0 run over the final 9:51 of the period.

Clarkson inched closer with two of the second period's first three goals, but two more from Heiting sandwiched around a Maurer tally put Union up 11-3 late in the stanza. The Golden Knights scored two in the final minute to get within six at 11-5 at the half.

But Union responded well in the third quarter, scoring six times to Clarkson's one to put the game away. Julien and Smith scored twice each in the frame, while Heiting and Charlton added one each in the pivotal period that gave Union an insurmountable 17-6 lead.

Union will return to conference play next Saturday when the Dutchwomen travel to Vassar College for a 1 p.m. matchup.
