Dutchwomen End Season With Losses to Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, V.T. – The Union College softball team closed out their 2022 season with a double header against Middlebury College on Sunday afternoon. Union lost game one 4-3 and lost 8-2 in game two.

Game One: Middlebury 4, Union 3

Middlebury jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with runs in the first and second inning. The Panthers scored on single in the first. They added two runs in the second inning on a triple and then a pass ball.

After first-year Kasey Walsh earned a walk and reached second on a wild pitch, Union cut into the lead with a single from junior Tara Hartnett. They trailed 3-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Dutchwomen pulled within a run. First-year Tatum Perkins singled to center to begin the inning. She then stole second. Walsh singled through the right side and advanced Perkins to third, before scoring on a throwing error by the right fielder. Union trailed 3-2.

In the sixth inning, Union evened things up at 3-3. Following back to back singles from senior Rochelle Nuqui and first-year Nahnny Sobetzko, union found themselves with two runners on and one out. After a wild pitch that advanced runners to second and third. Perkins grounded out and scored Nuqui from third to even everything up.

Middlebury walked things off in the bottom of the seventh after three singles to win 4-3.

First-year Riley Callahan (2-1) was tabbed with the loss. She allowed one run on three hits in. Junior Amanda Granato started the game and went four innings, while allowing three runs on six hits. She also struck out two batters. Nuqui pitched two innings and allowed two hits in her effort.

Game Two: Middlebury 8, Union 2

The Dutchwomen opened the scoring in game two. They plated two runs on one hit and an error. Following Hartnett reaching first on an error, junior Karson Saunders singled down the right field line and scored Hartnett. Later in the inning, teammate Olivia Valery grounded out and moved Saunders to third. Saunders then scored on a wild pitch. Union led 2-0.

In the bottom of the first inning, Middlebury answered with two runs of their own to even things up at 2-2. The Panthers scored three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump in front 5-2. Middlebury added three more runs in the fourth inning off a three-run home run, taking an 8-2 lead over the Dutchwomen.

Granato (10-8) earned the loss in game two. She threw four innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits in the effort. Nuqui came in relief. She allowed one hit and struck out one in two innings of action for Union.

The Dutchwomen's 2022 season has drawn to a close, they finished in fifth place in the Liberty League. They won their most games in a season since 2019, as Union posted a 19-13 record this season.
