AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – Junior
Jason Goldblum recorded his league-leading sixth save of the season as the Union College baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a win over non-conference opponent Trinity College, 8-7, Tuesday evening at Shuttleworth Park.
Junior
Jono Santos was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a double, a solo homerun, and two runs scored. Senior
Justin Cabanas hit his second career homerun, a two run blast, while sophomore
Anthony Ruzzo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
After a scoreless first inning, Union took a 2-0 lead off of a homerun by Cabanas. After classmate
Jack DiNanno reached first on a fielder's choice, Cabanas stepped up and drove the ball over the right field fence for a two-run homerun.
The Dutchmen added five runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. Union capitalized on a pair of throwing errors early in the frame to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore
Anthony Ruzzo added a two-run RBI single before classmate
Noah Schott added an RBI single of his own to cap off the inning.
Santos added a solo homerun in the fourth inning, his seventh of the season, to give Union an 8-0 lead.
The Bantams mounted a comeback in the sixth and seventh innings, starting with a three-run blast to right field to break the shutout bid. Trinity tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning to cut Union's lead to one.
Union hung onto the one run lead in the final two innings to win the final game of the regular season.
Junior
Harry Azadian earned his first win of the season for the Dutchmen. Azadian threw four innings without allowing a single hit. He finished the day with seven runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work with one strikeout. First-year
Aidan McGee led the team with three strikeouts and only allowed one hit in 1.2 innings. Goldblum earned his sixth save of the year, fanning two and allowing one hit, in one inning. Luke Pascarella takes the loss for the Bantams, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and striking out two in 2.2 innings.
The Dutchmen will face Ithaca, the top seed in the West, in the best-of-three Liberty League Crossover Series beginning with a Saturday doubleheader in Ithaca. The winner of the series will move on to the four-team double-elimination Liberty League Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Freeman Field.
