ITHACA, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team had its 2021-22 season come to a close on Friday afternoon, as the sixth-seeded Dutchmen fell to third-seeded Hobart College by a 5-0 score in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center.
The Statesmen started the day by sweeping the three doubles matches to grab control early. Harry Lyu and Troy Steiner earned an 8-1 win at second singles for the team's first point, and Hobart followed with an 8-3 win at third doubles and an 8-4 win at first doubles.
Hyat Oyer pushed Hobart to the brink of a victory with his 6-0, 6-2 fifth-singles win over sophomore
Dimitris Binopoulos, who was making his first appearance on the court in three weeks. Jacob Linares provided the clinching point for the Statesmen, defeating junior
Aidan O'Brien at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-3.
First-year
Ben Jacobs was on his way to a victory at second singles, taking the first set from Lyu by a 6-1 score and earning a break up 4-3 in the second, but the match was halted once the Statesmen earned their decisive fifth point.
Senior
Cameron Klepper and first-year
Ian Schunk both battled hard in their respective matches to keep Union alive a little longer as well. Klepper was down 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set before battling back for a 7-6 (7-5) supertiebreaker win to send his third-singles match with Sean Pesin to a third set. Schunk took the final three games from Steiner to win the second set of his sixth-singles match by a 6-4 score, and had won the first game of the third set before all matches were halted.
Senior
Ioannis Binopoulos was tied 3-3 in the second set of his first-singles match with Winter Fagerberg after dropping the opening set, 6-2.
Union finishes the 2021-22 season with a 5-11 record and will graduate four seniors this spring: Binopoulos, Klepper,
Jack Andre and
Nick Weitzman.
