Women's Tennis Finishes Season in Liberty League First Round

ITHACA, N.Y. – The sixth-seeded Union College women's tennis team finished the 2021-22 season with a 5-0 loss to third-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament on Friday evening at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center.

Rensselaer (13-7) started the match with three doubles wins, then finished off the first two singles matches of the day to complete the victory.

Alex Mednikova and Rani Jones got things started for the Engineers with an 8-2 win at first doubles, while Sonya Khudyakov and Brooke Bauer won by the same score at third doubles before an 8-5 win at second doubles completed the sweep.

Wins for Mednikova at first singles and Jones at third singles finished off the victory for RPI.

Sophomore Kate Hirnak had a good effort for Union (5-8) at fifth singles, taking the first set 6-3 from Bauer and holding a 3-2 lead in the second set before play was halted after RPI's fifth point. Junior Marilena Karadimou also played Lorna Flores Gonzalez even in a tightly contested first set, with both players winning six games before the match ended.

Union finishes the season with a 5-8 record and is slated to return all members of the team as the Dutchwomen look to return to the postseason in 2022-23.
