Friedman Scores as Union Shuts Out Hartwick 1-0

Mayor's Cup All-Tournament Team

ONEONTA, N.Y.
– Sophomore Sam Friedman scored the lone goal as the Union College women's soccer team shut out the Hawks of Hartwick College on Sunday afternoon from Elmore Field. Union improved to 4-0 on the season.

Friedman found the back of the net in the 36th minute of the first half. After a blocked shot from junior Amanda Sgueglia, Friedman followed up the rebound with a shot from 22 yards out and snuck it inside the far-left side post, past the diving goalie. This gave Union a 1-0 lead. Union out shot Hartwick 4-2, with of those shots landing in frame. Union also had the lone corner opportunity of the game.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half and Union hung on to win 1-0 over Hartwick. Union finished the game out shooting Hartwick 9-3 with five shots on goal.

Senior goalie Abby Mitty earned the start and stopped the one shot that made it on goal. First-year Rachel Berliner started the second half of the game and faced one shot that did not make it on net.

Following the game today Union was named runner-ups in the Mayor's Cup Tournament. Three Dutchwomen were named to the All-Tournament team, Friedman, senior Emma Maley, and first-year Anne Pearl

The Dutchwomen's road trip continues as they travel to Worcester, Mass., for a Wednesday night game against the Engineers of WPI. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
