Field Hockey Keeps Rolling with 9-0 Victory over Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Junior Grace Krebs and first-year Megan Dorsey each scored twice to lead seven different goal scorers as the Union College field hockey team remained undefeated with a 9-0 win over Elms College on Saturday evening at Leary Field.

In moving to 5-0 on the season, Union has tied the fourth-longest winning streak in program history, behind only a 14-game streak in 1988 and seven-game stretches in 2007 and 2008. The five-game streak also is tied for the second-longest to start a season ever at Union, behind only the 1988 team that started off with 14 wins in a row.

Dorsey led all players on Saturday with a season-high five points, more than doubling her season output with two goals and an assist. Krebs also matched her career-high with two goals, while junior Sophie Ruhl added a goal and an assist for a career-high three points as well. In addition, sophomores Shaelyn Kelley and Grace Goddard notched their first career goals in the victory. The nine goals are the most in a game for Union since beating Regis College 13-0 on September 8, 2007.

As has been done in many games this season, Union blitzed Elms in the opening frame, scoring three times in the first 3:32 and six times overall in the first period. It took just 82 seconds for Union to get on the board with Krebs' first tally of the game, followed less than two minutes later by two goals in 20 seconds from Dorsey and classmate Alyssa Pavano.

Dorsey added her second of the game midway through the frame, followed soon after by goals from Goddard and senior Jill Bove to give Union an insurmountable lead after 15 minutes. Union outshot Elms 13-2 in the frame.

With the game already in hand, Union settled in offensively over the final three quarters, attempting just 10 total shots the rest of the way. Kelley notched the first goal of her career 5:24 into the second period to give Union a 7-0 lead headed into halftime. Krebs netted her second just 32 seconds into the third quarter and Ruhl followed less than four minutes later to account for the final score.

Union finished the game with a 23-4 edge in shots, with first-year Sophie Brady earning the shutout despite not needing to make a save.

Union has one more test before the start of conference play, coming on Wednesday with a matchup against Hartwick College set for 6 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
