NEWTON, MASS. – Junior
Liz DiCecco broke a scoreless tie in the 76th minute in helping the Union College women's soccer team win their sixth straight game with a 1-0 victory over Lasell University on Saturday afternoon from Taylor Field.
The Dutchwomen are 6-0-0 for the first time since 2012, when the team started off with seven straight victories. With their sixth straight shutout, it marks the first time in program history that Union has not allowed a goal through the first six games to start a season.
This shutout streak, which now stands at 540:00, is now the fifth-longest scoreless stretch in program history and only the third-time ever that the team has gone six straight games without conceding a tally. The last time Union went longer than 540:00 without allowing a goal was in 2005.
The Dutchwomen seemed to have control for most of the first half as they sent shot after shot at the Lasell goal, but were unable to find the back of the net. Union out shot Lasell 8-3 in the first half and controlled the corner opportunities 3-2 as well.
The second half was more of the same for Union. They sent six shots at the net in the second half. In the 76th minute, sophomore
Sam Friedman took a shot that hit the crossbar and rebounded right to DiCecco, who was able to corral the ball and finish it into the goal for a 1-0 lead. This was DiCecco's first goal of the season, and the game-winning goal. Friedman earned the assist, extending her points streak to four games.
Senior
Abby Mitty and first-year
Rachel Berliner split time in the net as they have done all season. Mitty made two saves in the first half, while Berliner made one save in the second half.
Union (6-0-0) will continue their road trip on Tuesday evening when they open Liberty League play on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Bard College.
