DURHAM, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team allowed four goals in the first period and were not able to get back into the game as they fell 5-2 to the University of New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon from the Whittemore Center. First-year
Riley Walsh and sophomore
Paige Greco found the back of the net for Union.
It took only 62 seconds for the Wildcats to take an early lead in the second game of the weekend, and just 67 seconds later the Wildcats doubled their lead over the Dutchwomen and never looked back. The home team would add two more goals in a 20-second span in the first period to give themselves a 4-0 lead. Walsh got Union on board as she did last night as well with her third goal of the young season. Sophomore
Maren Friday and junior
Celeste Beaudoin were credited with assists. Union was out shot 10-7 in the period.
Greco cut the Union deficit to two at the 4:10 mark of the second period. The assists were credited to juniors
Meredith Killian and
Allison Smith. This was Greco's first goal of the season. Union was out shot 7-5 in the second frame and went 0-2 on the power-play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
Union continued to up their pressure in the third period as they outshot the Wildcats 15-2 in the period. UNH weathered the storm, however, and scored their fifth goal of the game when Union pulled their goalie. Sophomore
Sophie Matsoukas made 14 saves in the effort.
The Dutchwomen (1-1-0) will continue their eight-game road trip next Friday, September 30 when they take on Holy Cross for the first time since 2003-04. Friday's game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
