Balanced Effort Leads Women's Hoops Past Bard

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore Emma Riley led 11 Union College players on the scoresheet with a career-high 12 points as the Dutchwomen got back in the win column with a 64-39 victory over Bard College in Liberty League action on Friday night at Viniar Athletic Center.

It was a well-rounded effort for Union (5-10, 3-6 Liberty League) on Friday night, with no player playing more than 19 minutes and 14 players taking at least one shot from the field. In addition to Riley's 12 points, senior Kendall Degenhardt chipped in 11 points, while fellow senior Elizabeth Pica scored nine points and hauled in a career-best seven rebounds off the bench.

Thalia Grandinetti scored a game-high 16 points and Maggy Peyton added 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Bard (1-13, 0-7 Liberty League).

Senior Megan Lee scored the game's first bucket on the third possession and the home team never trailed on the evening. Union led 5-4 midway through the first period before closing on an 11-2 run, capped off by a putback from first-year Jelena Perovic just before the buzzer to make it a 16-6 game.

Union followed up with the first eight points of the second stanza to take a 24-6 lead after a Degenhardt layup with 6:54 remaining. A 10-1 run later in the frame increased the advantage to 25 at 36-11, with a jumper by junior Grace Enselek and a three from first-year Grace Ardito finishing off the run.

Union shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes, hitting 16-of-35 shots (45.7 percent) from the field in jumping out to an early lead, while also limiting Bard to 17 total shots thanks to forcing 16 turnovers.

Leading 36-13 at the half, Union led by as many as 27 in the third quarter following a Riley three with 1:57 left that put the home team up 48-21. Riley again provided the high-water mark in the final frame, hitting a jumper with 3:08 on the clock to put Union up 59-30.

Union finished the game shooting 38.2 percent (26 of 68) from the field while posting a 36-16 edge scoring in the paint and converting 20 Bard turnovers into 19 points.

Union will return to action tomorrow with a matchup against #20/21 Ithaca College beginning at 2 p.m.
