Greco and Ruhl Lead Field Hockey Past Utica, 3-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year Maddie Greco scored a pair of goals and senior Sophie Ruhl added another to lead the Union College field hockey team to a commanding 3-0 victory over Utica University in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Greco recorded her fourth multi-goal game of the season to take back the team lead in goals from sophomore Megan Dorsey with nine on the season. Dorsey recorded an assist on Greco's first tally to give her a team-leading 20 points on the year. Ruhl added her fifth score of the season as well for Union (8-6).

The Garnet Chargers dominated play for large portions of the contest, finishing with a 22-5 edge in total shots and putting 12 shots on target to Utica's two. After earning just one penalty corner in the first period, Union recorded 17 over the final three frames to finish the night at 18, compared to seven for the Pioneers.

After more than 10 minutes of action without a shot on goal, Union struck first at the 10:26 mark. Dorsey made space down the near wing and fired a pass across the crease area for Greco to redirect into the net for the eventual game-winner.

The home team ratcheted up the attack in the second stanza, sending 11 shots toward the Utica net. Despite eight saves from Hannah Young, Ruhl made it a 2-0 game 7:09 into the period by deflecting a shot from first-year Brooke Spiegel into the net.

Greco completed the scoring with 10:28 remaining in the third quarter, beating several Utica defenders to a ball in the crease area and shuffling the ball into an open net.

First-year Caroline Lewkowicz earned her second start of the season in goal and picked up her second victory, making one save, while senior Haley Dineer and sophomore Kat Bruun added defensive saves to preserve the shutout.

Union will return to action on Friday in the team's regular-season home finale, taking on Vassar College beginning at 4 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field in a big Liberty League matchup.
