Union Finishes Conference Slate with 4-2 Win over RPI

TROY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team finished off one of the most successful conference slates in program history with a 4-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday afternoon at Harkness Field.

With the win, Union (9-7, 4-3 Liberty League) matches the program record for conference victories in a season, tying the previous mark first set in 2007 and matched in each of the three subsequent seasons. Union will be the fifth seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and will face off with fourth-seeded Vassar College in the first round.

Four different Garnet Chargers found the net on Sunday, led by sophomore Megan Dorsey with a goal and an assist. Senior Grace Krebs and first-years Maddie Greco and Rachel Ostiguy all scored as well for the visitors, while sophomore Sophie Brady made two saves in goal.

Ostiguy opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 10th minute, taking the ball down the right side and, after her pass was deflected back to her, tapped the ball in at the near post for her sixth goal of the season.

After Lauren McCarthy scored the first of her two goals to tie the game for RPI, Greco netted the eventual go-ahead goal with 5:26 remaining in the second stanza, racing down the far sideline and beating the goalie for her team-best 10th goal of the year. The goal made her the first Union first-year in at least two decades to reach double figures in goals in a season. Dorsey added to the lead later in the period, scoring her ninth of the season off a penalty corner.

Krebs finished off the Union scoring just 81 seconds into the third period, finishing off an extended penalty corner possession by taking a pass from Dorsey in close quarters and finding the net.

Union finished the game with an 18-7 edge in shots and led the corner battle by a 15-6 margin as well.

Union will close out the regular season with a pair of non-conference road contests, beginning on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Smith College.
