POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Union College Men's Soccer team wrapped up the 2023 regular season with a 1-1 draw at Clarkson Saturday afternoon.
Union's draw combined with St. Lawrence's loss to Hobart clinches the two-seed in the Liberty League playoffs for the Garnet Chargers. The Garnet Chargers playoff appearance will be the program's first since 2015, and the semifinal game on Friday after Union's first round bye will be the first playoff match at College Park Field since 2010. Union's opponent will be determined by the result of the quarterfinal match between #3 Ithaca and #6 Vassar, and the time of the match is TBA.
First-year
Marco Perugini potted his team-leading sixth goal of the year in the 26th minute, before a Golden Knights goal with 11 minutes left brought the score to one aside.
Perugini's six goals are the most by a first-year since Sebastiaan Jansen scored half a dozen in 2009.
Senior
Robbie Michalski took a through ball from behind the midfield line on a run towards goal. To the left of the goalie just outside the 18-yard box, Michalski took a pair of touches before pulling off a gracious spin move and dishing it to the wide open Perugini to put in the back of the net to give Union the 1-0 lead.
Clarkson retaliated in the final dozen minutes of the game. Using a methodical attack with all 10 outside the goal crease in the offensive half of the field, some smart passing created a look for Nolan Grady, who fired a left-footed strike from distance into the top corner of the net.
Each team put a spirited attack on goal in the first half, with Union outshooting Clarkson 7-4, before the two teams managed just four combined shots in the final 45 minutes, with the hosts outshooting the visitors 3-1.
Clarkson managed just two shots on goal outside their late goal, with first-year
Paul Agne making one save in each half. Perugini and Michalski each led Union with two shots, and accounted for the two Garnet Chargers shots on goal.
