SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College women's soccer team wrapped up their 2023 campaign on Saturday afternoon, falling to Clarkson by a score of 2-1.
Before the match, Union celebrated the six members of their Class of 2024.
Meg Piser,
Liz DiCecco,
Amanda Sgueglia,
Stefanie Simkins,
Maddie O'Brien, and
Cassidy Careccia were honored for their contributions to the program and celebrated pregame.
After Clarkson outshot Union 12-3 in the first half, it was the Garnet Chargers who struck first. Just past the 70th minute mark, junior
Katie Kilmeade sent a perfect ground pass through the center of the Golden Knights defense from midfield to send classmate
Sam Friedman in alone. Friedman took one touch just outside the 18-yard box, and fired past the oncoming, diving Clarkson goalkeeper to give Union a 1-0 lead.
The goal would give Friedman her team-leading fifth goal of the season and 10th and 11th points. The five goals matches the tally she put up a season ago, while the 11 points sees the Brookline, Massachusetts native hit double digits all three years in a Union uniform.
Clarkson would be quick to respond, needing less than three minutes to draw the game even. A scramble inside the Union goalie's box off a Clarkson corner saw the ball go right to Emily Davis, who put the ball in the left side of the net.
Davis would strike again fifteen minutes later from the top of the 18-yard box to give Clarkson the lead with less than two minutes left, and the Golden Knights would not relinquish.
Clarkson outshot Union 27-6 in the contest, putting eight shots on goal compared to Union's four, while also firing 11 corner kicks, while Union did not register one. Sophomore
Rachel Berliner finished off a strong second season with seven saves, keeping Union in the game all the way through.
Union finishes the season 6-8-3, and will look to return to the Liberty League playoffs in 2024.
