MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -
Sam Friedman's and
Gianna Pentland's two goals apiece led the Union College women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory in a game they completely controlled at Morrisville State Tuesday evening.
Â
Friedman scored the first two Union goals, with the first coming in the fourth minute. Union attacked early, and even though a cross to the middle missed the intended target, Morrisville's goalie came out of her net to play the ball and ended up passing it directly to Friedman, who put it in the empty net to give the Garnet Chargers the early lead.
Â
Union fired 14 more shots for a total of 16 in the opening half, but were unable to cash in.
Â
That quickly changed in the second.
Â
After
Vanessa Jorgensen was taken down in the box, Union was awarded a free kick. Friedman stepped to the spot, and even though her initial shot directly at the goalkeeper was saved, she easily placed home the rebound to the open left side.
Â
It was then Pentland's turn to pot her pair.
Â
In the 67th minute, the first-year played a ball with her back to the goal inside the box that bounced off a Morrisville defender and directly back to her. She then turned to the net, took one touch, and put her first goal in a Garnet Chargers uniform into the far side of the net.
Â
Not even five minutes later, Pentland tallied goal number two. Junior
Jenny Lopez played the ball down the right sideline and sent a pass to Pentland, who ripped a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and in, giving Lopez her first career point.
Â
Just a dozen minutes after Pentland's first collegiate goal,
Sophia Surber scored hers. Surber took a pass from fellow Connecticut native
Grace Buchanan and fired a shot from well outside the box that placed perfectly between the outstretched reach of the leaping goalkeeper and the bottom of the corner of the crossbar and right post. It was Buchanan's first career point and Surber's first career goal, and provided the final of 5-0 Union.
Â
First year
Maya Koster stopped the lone shot on net that came right before the final horn.
Â
In the contest, Union outshot Morrisville 32-3, including 18-1 with shots on goal. The Garnet Chargers registered all eight corner kicks that took place in the contest.
Â
Union returns to the field Saturday, when they get back to Liberty League action and host Bard at College Park Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
