Volleyball Sweeps in Senior Day Tri-Match

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College volleyball team swept their tri-match with wins over Manhattanville College and Curry College, 3-1 and 3-0, respectively in Saturday's senior day win at Viniar Athletic Center.

Prior to the Curry match, Union recognized the seven members of the senior class: Nikki Newcomer, Denali Douglas, Sophia Estok, Keara Page, Meredith Blinn, Caroline Fraser, and Brooke Fleming.

First-year Sydney Scanlon dished out a career-high 38 assists in the first match against Manhattanville. Four players registered double-digit kills. First-year Graciela Escobar registered 13 kills on the day while sophomore Shannon McGrath tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs to hit .464 in the morning game. First-year Maddie McCarron continued her strong freshman campaign with 10 kills, five total blocks, three solo blocks, and two aces against the Valiants.

In the opening set, the Valiants went up 2-0, before Union went on a 4-0 run led by a pair of kills by Page. After back-and-forth points, Manhattan went up 9-6, and didn't look back. A second 4-0 run put the visitors up 20-13. Union scored back-to-back points at set point, but fell 25-19 in the opening set.

Union jumped out to a 3-0 start in set two and held onto a lead throughout the set. The Valiants came within one, but Union led as many as five points in the set. A late push by Manhattanville saw the visitors close the gap 23-21, but back-to-back kills by McCarron and McGrath put away set two 25-21.

In the pivotal third set, Manhattanville scored the opening point before Union rattled off three straight points. A 3-0 Union run followed by a 4-0 Manhattanville run made it 8-7 Union. An 8-0 run by the Garnet Chargers broke the set open to take a 22-11 lead, highlighted by a a pair of kills by McCarron and capped off with an ace by senior Georgia Pool. The Valiants tried to charge back with three straight points, but a decisive 3-0 run by Union with Escobar clinching set point on a kill. Union capitalized on 10 errors by Manhattanville in the third set to take 2-1 lead.

Union opened the fourth set with a 4-0 run before two kills and a service ace by McCarron made it a 12-5 set. Manhattanville scored five in a row to come within four, but Union countered with six points including three kills by Escobar. McGrath finished off the set with a kill for Union to win the fourth set 25-15.

In the afternoon tilt, the Union seniors led the charge in the straight set sweep of Curry. Fleming registered 20 assists, her fourth match with 20 or more assists this season. Newcomer came close to a double-double with eight kills and 11 digs with four service aces. Defensively, Douglas led the way with a season-high 13 digs and her second match with 10 or more. McCarron added eight kills and three service aces on the afternoon while hitting .583.

Union started slow after a successful morning, trailing 6-2 before rattling off four straight points to tie it at six. The Colonels retook the lead before Union found their stride, taking the next four points to regain the lead. Curry battled back to tie it, but after some back-and-forth, Union scored 11 of the final 13 points in the set.

The Garnet Chargers continued their hot hitting and capitalized on errors to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the second set including a pair of kills by McCarron. Curry came back within one, but Union kept the pressure on and led by as many as seven points in the set.

The third set was all Union as the hosts took a commanding 12-3 lead in the third set. Union went up by double-figures only 18 points into the set. Curry put together some points late, but it wasn't enough as Union finished the day with a kill by Fraser and a service ace by Estok.

Union is back in action with a midweek matchup at Middlebury College on Wednesday.
