Union Defeats Rochester to Improve to 6-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In a game that saw five lead changes, it was the Union College football team that emerged victorious in a Liberty League matchup over the University of Rochester, 21-17, on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Junior Jonathan Anderson rushed for a career-high 211 yards and a touchdown while senior Michael Fiore racked up 169 yards and two touchdowns. Combined, the two running backs registered 380 of Union's 403 yards on the ground. As a whole, Union registered 537 yards of total offense.

Senior Cole DaSilva led the way with eight tackles, seven solo, and one tackle for a four-yard loss. Fellow senior Spencer Goldstien made his third interception of the season, matching a career-high from 2022.

Rochester opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal, marking the first time this season that Union has trailed in a game. After back-and-forth chances in the first, Union took possession with only 17 seconds left in the first quarter. Anderson had a big break, dashing for 23 yards to get into Rochester territory. Senior Donovan Pacatte connected with first-year Dan Quinn with a 21-yard pass to get to the Rochester 21-yard line. On the next snap, Fiore rushed up the middle for 21-yards and junior Max Gluck successfully made the PAT to make it a 7-3 game early in the second quarter.

The hosts wasted no time responding. In the next drive, Daniel Papantonis rushed for seven yards before quarterback Ryan Rose found Trey Johnson for a 68-yard touchdown reception to regain the lead. Union countered back on the ensuing drive. Three straight rushes by Fiore followed by five straight runs by Anderson, including a 32-yard sprint, brought Union all the way to the one-yard line. Fiore bulldozed his way across the line for his second touchdown of the game to give Union once again. The Yellow Jackets did not go away and added a touchdown with one second to go in the half to take a 17-14 lead into the locker room.

Coming out of the locker room, Union took possession and marched up the field. Three straight rushes by Fiore brought Union to the 15-yard line. Anderson went back-to-back with runs of 13 yards and two yards, respectively, for the score.

The fourth quarter saw more back-and-forth action for both teams. An interception by Goldstien at the Union 15-yard line with 3:01 to play gave Union the ball back. A 55-yard rush by Anderson on the third snap of the game put the Garnet Chargers deep in Rochester's territory, but time was on the visitor's side as Union maintained possession in the final minutes to come away with the victory.

Union is back in action on Saturday with a matchup with Ithaca College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Butterfield Stadium.
