#5/6 Union Spreads the Wealth in 21-8 Victory

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Thirteen different players scored and sixteen players had at least one point as the #5/6 Union College men's lacrosse team rolled past Emerson College by a 21-8 score in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Senior Peter Burnes led all players with five points, scoring two goals and adding three assists. Junior Peter Kip netted a game-high four goals, while juniors Michael Shaw and Jake Mabardy recorded three points (two goals and an assist) each. Seniors Cole Hartman and Jake Titus both scored twice apiece, while seven others netted one goal.

Union (5-0) dominated in all aspects of the game, outshooting Emerson (3-4) by a 68-27 margin, grabbing 51 ground balls to Emerson's 19, and winning 26-of-33 faceoffs. Junior Matthew Paolatto won 10 of his 11 draws, sophomore Luke McHugh went 11-of-15 from the X, and first-year Luke Tranter went 5-for-7.

After Emerson's Benson Offit scored the first goal of the game, Union came back with the next five. Burnes scored 27 seconds after Offit to knot the score, and a clean faceoff win from Paolatto led to a Mabardy goal eight seconds later to put Union ahead for good. The home team put home four more goals to take a 6-2 lead after 15 minutes.

The Lions hung with Union early in the second quarter, scoring two of the first three goals to trail 7-4 with 11:53 left. But Union again struck quickly to kill any momentum, with Kip and Shaw scoring 45 seconds apart, followed soon after by goals from Hartman, Mabardy and Kip to put the home team up 12-4. Junior Henry Quaintance added his first of the year with 1:15 left to make the score 13-5 at the half.

Union scored six of the first seven goals of the third frame, including the first career tallies for senior Cooper Weidner and first-year Emmett Lyne, as well as goals from junior Zach Davis and first-year Hazen Pike. Juniors Clayton Arcuri and Finn Garrity netted their first goals of the season in the fourth period to close out the scoring for the home team.

First-year Gavin Trahan got his first collegiate start in goal, making three saves in the first half. Sophomore Ward Tucker got the call in the second stanza, stopping 8-of-11 shots in the final 30 minutes.

After taking some time off for finals, Union will return to action on March 21 when the team heads to Austin, Texas to take on Middlebury College in a Spring Break battle.
