McPartlon's Huge Day Leads Union to Third Straight Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Senior Sydney McPartlon recorded a career-high nine points to lead the Union College women's lacrosse team to its third straight victory, defeating Plattsburgh State University by a 18-5 score in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

McPartlon had a huge game to lead Union (3-1), scoring a career-high seven goals and adding two assists for a nine-point effort. Fellow seniors Drew Charlton and Dana Truini scored three goals apiece, while classmate Katie Julien also had three points on a goal and two assists.

The shots were relatively even on the day, but Union was incredibly efficient by scoring 18 goals on just 27 total shots, including a 5-of-8 effort from the eight-meter arc. First-year Sydney Widlitz went the distance in goal and made a season-high 10 saves to earn the win.

Plattsburgh scored on the game's first possession to take the early lead, but the visitors came back with the next nine to take firm control of the contest. After Caroline Noia's score for PSU, Truini found the net less than a minute later to even the score. McPartlon then followed with two straight goals to give Union its first lead of the day. After more than six minutes of scoreless action, first-year Maddie Doyle added to the lead with her second of the year and McPartlon fed Julien for a goal in the final minute to make it a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes.

The visitors added three goals in just over three minutes to start the second stanza, with McPartlon scoring off the opening draw and Charlton adding back-to-back tallies. Junior Audrey Larson extended Union's run to nine straight tallies with a player-up tally with 9:47 left, but Plattsburgh State finally ended the run with two goals in less than a minute to get back within six at the midway point of the period. The Cardinals added another goal to get within five, but McPartlon weaved through traffic to net her fourth of the half in the final minutes and give Union a 10-4 lead at the break.

Shots in the first half were even at 16 apiece, with Widlitz making five saves to keep her team ahead.

Union closed the door with six unanswered goals in the third period. McPartlon started the second half just as she ended the first, ripping a free-position shot past PSU goalie Johanna Malone and then adding another 24 seconds later to put Union up 12-4 less than a minute into the third period. A goal by Truini from the eight-meter arc followed with 10:42 left, and junior Dana Nelson triggered the running clock less than four minutes later with her first of the day. Union continued to cash in from the eight-meter arc with goals by Charlton and Truini later in the frame to take a 16-4 lead into the fourth.

After the Cardinals scored the opening goal of the fourth frame, McPartlon added her career-high seventh of the day later in the frame and senior Elena Gerrato closed out the scoring in the final minutes.

Union will return home on Wednesday for its final non-conference game of the regular season, taking on Smith College beginning at 6 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
