HILTON HEAD, S.C. – After falling into an early hole, the Union College men's tennis team won five of the six singles matches to storm back and defeat the College of Wooster by a 6-3 score in a non-conference matchup on Monday morning at the Van der Meer Tennis Center.

Junior
Dimitris Binopoulos and sophomore
Ben Jacobs combined for three of Union's six victories on the day, earning the team's lone doubles point and each chipping in a singles victory.

In doubles play, Union earned one point to keep itself in striking distance headed into singles competition. At the top flight, Binopoulos and Jacobs earned two early breaks to take a commanding 5-1 lead before holding serve the rest of the way in an 8-4 victory. While the other two doubles matches did not go Union's way, the team still was in good position for a comeback.

Jacobs completed another undefeated day with an early 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gabriel Escobar at first singles to quickly even the match at two, thanks in part to five breaks in Escobar's eight service games.

Wooster took the lead back soon after, but sophomore
Ian Schunk knocked off Connor Streeter, 6-3, 6-4, at the fifth flight just a few minutes later to knot the match again. Schunk clinched the win by coming back from an 0-3 hole in the second frame, breaking Streeter's serve three straight times in the process.

Binopoulos then gave Union its first lead of the morning with a 6-4, 6-2 second-singles win over Alexander Drewes, putting Union one point away from a victory. The junior allowed Drewes to win only two of his nine service games on the day.

With Union needing to win just one of the final two singles matches, senior
Thomas McGuire and junior
Khai Ton both pulled out victories nearly simultaneously to give Union the victory. Ton stormed back from a set down to defeat Patrick Johnson in a third-singles supertiebreaker, winning by a 4-6, 6-2, (10-1) score. At sixth singles, McGuire pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Namit Misra.

After taking tomorrow off from competition, Union will close out Spring Break with a pair of matches on Wednesday, beginning with a 9 a.m. match against Oberlin College.
