Softball Falls to Buffalo State and Bowdoin in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Union College softball team earned seven strong innings of work from senior Amanda Granato in game one before falling to Buffalo State and Bowdoin College on Tuesday afternoon from Legends Ball Fields. Union lost 2-1 to the Bengals and 8-2 to the Polar Bears.

Granato threw a complete game three hitter, that saw her strike out a career high six batters in game one against Buffalo State.

Game 1: Buffalo State 2, Union College 1

Union and Buffalo State faced off in a pitcher's duel, with both pitchers throwing complete games. Union's Granato and Buffalo State's Madison Lucas each threw seven innings for their teams.

The Bengals (3-3) opened the scoring in the first inning to grab an early 1-0 lead. Buffalo State added to their lead in the third inning with a single up the middle that scored a run.

Union (0-5) cut into the Bengals' lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Olivia Valery reached base on a single to the pitcher. First-year Ellie Wintringer advanced Valery with a single of her own. Senior Amanda Granato helped herself out on the mound with a single back to the pitcher and scored Valery on a throwing error. Union trailed 2-1.

Union continued to threaten in the fifth inning with sophomore Melody Kappel and senior Anna Zduncyzk reaching base, but were unable o plated either runner. Union lost 2-1 to the Bengals.

Granato (0-3) finished the game with seven innings pitched, allowing three hits and striking out a career high six batters in the game. Her previous career high was five, last season against Russel Sage. Valery went 2-3 in the batter's box, with two singles.
 
Game 2: Bowdoin College 8, Union College 2

Union (0-6) opened the scoring early in the first inning. Senior Karson Saunders singled with two outs to keep the inning alive. She then stole second base and third base, before coming home to score on a wild pitch. Union led 1-0 after the first half inning.

Bowdoin (7-7) answered with runs of their own in bottom half of the inning and grabbed a 2-1 lead after one inning of action. The Polar Bears then scored three runs in the second inning and three more in third inning to take an 8-1 lead over Union.

The garnet and white scored their second run of the game in the fourth inning after sophomore Nahnny Sobetzko scored Saunders from third on a ground out. Union trailed 8-2, and were unable to score over the next three innings, to fall 8-2 to Bowdoin.

Sophomore Melody Kappel (0-2) threw 2.1 innings, while classmate Autumn Duff threw 3.1 innings of relief, striking out two batters and allowing two hits.

Union will look for their first win of the season on Thursday, March 23, as they face off against Keuka College at 9 a.m. and Manchester at 2 p.m. on their final day of games at legends Ball Fields.
