DAVENPORT, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team continued their Florida trip with a split on Thursday afternoon. Union fell to Kalamazoo College, 6-1, before getting back in the win column with a 5-2 victory over Keuka College.
Game One: Kalamazoo 6, Union 1
Kalamazoo opened the scoring in the first with a pair of runs. The Hornets built a six-run lead over the first seven innings.
Union broke the no-hitter bid in the top of the eighth inning when first-year
Liam McIlroy singled through the left side. Senior
Jack Davis reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third with two outs. McIlroy capitalized on a wild pitch to put Union on the board.
First-year
Jack Klein tossed six innings in his first collegiate start on the mound. Klein allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits, while striking out five. Junior
Kyle Patlove had two stellar innings of relief, striking out four of the six batters faced, and allowing no hits or runs.
Game Two: Union 5, Keuka 2
Union flipped the script in the second game of the afternoon. The team continued to showcase their speed on the base path, racking up 12 stolen bases in the afternoon's win. Sophomore
Dan Sheeran went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored while junior
Sebastian Pike went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. In his first collegiate start, first-year
Andrew Keaveney went 3-for-4, registering his first collegiate hit, a single.
After getting hit by a pitch to start the game, Sheeran stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior
Kobe Mentzer singled to center field to put Union up 1-0.
Union added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Sheeran hit a leadoff double and stole third. An RBI single by first-year
Caleb Miller made it a 2-0 game. Miller and Mentzer both crossed the plate for Union.
The garnet and white added a fifth run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pike sent a double into left field to open the frame. After Pike stole third, McIlroy hit a sac fly to center field for Union's final run.
Keuka got on the board in the ninth inning, plating two runs in the stanza. With two runners on, Keuka hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it a 5-2 game.
Junior
Deven Smith recorded his first win of the season. Smith pitched seven complete innings, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Patlove pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Senior
Jason Goldblum picked up his first save of the season, striking out two, and allowing two runs on three hits.
Union is back in action tomorrow with a single game against Augustana College. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Main Field.
