Union Scores 17 Runs in Win Over Cazenovia

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team erupted for 17 runs in a 17-2 win against Cazenovia College Wednesday evening at Shuttleworth Park.

The 17 runs are the most for Union since April 26, 2022, a 23-11 win against Bard.

Seven Union players registered extra-base hits on the evening. Junior Thomas Parisi led the way at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Sophomore Nick Hiltsley hit his first collegiate homerun, a two-run blast, in a 1-for-3 day at the plate. First-year Caleb Miller went 2-for-3, including a bases-clearing triple, and four RBI.

After two scoreless innings to start the game, Union plated two in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Jack Milone drew a walk and a single by Ryan Cowles put runners on first and second. Miller lined an RBI single into right field for the first run of the inning. In the next at-bat, Parisi hit an RBI double into center field.

Cazenovia made it a one run game in the fourth, but the Union bats broke the game open in the bottom of the frame. Senior Dan Choate drew a leadoff walk and one batter later, Hiltsely smacked his first collegiate homerun over the left field fence. Miller added a bases-clearing triple later in the stanza to make it a 7-1 game.

After scoring one run each in the sixth and seventh innings, Union tacked on eight runs in the eighth. Senior Jono Santos drove in a pair of runs off a double to right field and scored on a single by classmate Colby Nash one batter later. First-year catcher Cooper Ames added a triple of his own later in the frame to drive in two runs before he crossed home on a double by Parisi.

In the scheduled bullpen game, nine different pitchers took the mound for Union. Sophomore Aidan McGee earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the season, striking out two in the third inning. Sophomore Alex Erickson pitched the eighth inning and struck out the side.

Union is back in action on Saturday with the Liberty League conference opener against Capital Region rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
