Donahue's 22 Saves Backstop #5/7 Union to 13-5 Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Dan Donahue made a season-high 22 saves and four different players recorded multiple goals to lead the #5/7 Union College men's lacrosse team to a 13-5 victory over Springfield College on Sunday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 19856 Stadium.

Union (3-0) once again spread around the offense on Sunday, with seven players finding the net. Senior Peter Burnes led all players with five points on three goals and two assists, followed by junior Jake Mabardy with three tallies. Fellow juniors Peter Kip and Michael Shaw added two goals apiece as well, with Kip chipping in an assist to finish with three points.

On the defensive end, Donahue had one of the best games of his career, turning aside a season-best 22 shots while allowing only five goals, one short of his career best for both saves and goals allowed. The junior had at least six saves in three of the four quarters, including a game-high seven in the third frame.

After Donahue made stops on Springfield's first two possessions, senior Owen Toland opened the scoring 4:00 into the contest with his first tally of the season. Union then struck for two goals in eight seconds soon after, with Burnes finding the net from junior Justin Greene and then Shaw scoring after junior Matthew Paolatto cleanly won the draw and went down the field for the feed.

Springfield's Conor Tracy scored two in a row for the visitors, including one while man-up, to get back within a goal, but Kip stopped the momentum with his first of the game to give Union a 4-2 lead after one quarter. The home team followed up by scoring three of the four goals in the second stanza, with Mabardy netting a pair and Kip adding his second of the afternoon to take a 7-3 lead into the half.

Union put the game away with a strong third frame, scoring five unanswered goals and getting seven stops from Donahue to take a commanding 12-3 advantage. Burnes had three points with two goals and an assist during the frame, while Mabardy, Shaw and sophomore Matt Blasi all scored as well. The Pride outshot Union 16-5 in the fourth frame with the result no longer in doubt, but still only outscored Union 2-1. Senior Cole Hartman scored his first goal of the year in the final frame for the home team.

Springfield outshot Union 51-46, but Donahue's 22 saves far surpassed the 11 of Springfield's Jack Hamilton. Union finished the game 23-for-24 in clears and also 15-6 edge at the faceoff X, with Paolatto winning 10-of-15 draws and sophomore Luke McHugh winning 5-of-6 faceoffs.

Union will return to action on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. matchup against Williams College at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
