TROY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team made the short trip across the Hudson River to take on ITA #30 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday afternoon, falling to their nationally ranked rivals by a 9-0 score in Liberty League play at Sharp Courts.
Union (4-7, 2-3 Liberty League) took a pair of singles matches to supertiebreakers and nearly forced a third set in two others, as the visitors put up a good fight against Rensselaer (7-5, 3-1 Liberty League).
At second singles, junior
Dimitris Binopoulos took the first set from Andy Zhu, 6-1, but came just short of finishing off the victory, falling 6-4 in the second set and 10-7 in the supertiebreaker. Sophomore
Ian Schunk also started strong in his fifth singles match versus Jonathan McMillan, taking the first set by a 6-3 margin before falling in the second set, 6-2, and the supertiebreaker, 10-6.
Senior
Aidan O'Brien came a tiebreaker short of forcing a final frame against Bryce Burnham at fourth singles, falling by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) score, while sophomore
Ben Jacobs came up one break short in the second set as well in a 6-1, 6-4 first-singles loss to Aiden Drover-Mattinen.
Union will make its final appearance of the season at home on Friday, when the team hosts St. Lawrence University in a big Liberty League matchup at the Union Tennis Courts and celebrates its seniors with Senior Day beginning at 2:30 p.m.
