AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team earned a Liberty League split in a doubleheader against Hobart College Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. Hobart (6-15, 2-9 Liberty League) took game one, 4-0, and Union (11-11, 3-5 Liberty League) bounced back for a 9-3 win in game two.
Game One: Hobart 4, Union 0
Hobart came out swinging in game one of the series. After back-to-back hits to put runners on second and third, a sac fly gave the Statesmen a 1-0 lead. Hobart added two more runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead.
Union was able to load the bases in the second, but grounded into a double play.
Hobart scored the final run of the game in the seventh. With a runner on third, an RBI single into center scored the fourth run of the game.
Union came knocking again in the ninth inning, but the Hobart defense shut the game down.
Sophomore
Chris Suter suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 4-1. Suter fanned four while giving up four runs on 11 hits in 6.2 innings. Junior
Kyle Patlove pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.
Game Two: Union 9, Hobart 3
The Union offense came alive in game two of the doubleheader. Sophomore
Dan Sheeran went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior
Jono Santos hit a bases-clearing triple, scored a run, and tallied four RBI.
Hobart took an early 2-0 lead in game two of the twin bill. The Union bats came alive in the bottom of the first inning, quickly taking a 3-2 lead. The first three Union batters all singled to reach base, and set up junior
Kobe Mentzer, who hit a sac fly to center field. Senior
Jono Santos reached on a fielder's choice one batter later, giving sophomore
Dan Sheeran time to cross home to knot the game at two. First-year
Caleb Miller hit an RBI single through the left side to give Union their first lead of the day.
In the bottom of the second, Union loaded the bases and Sheeran hit an RBI single through the right side. Two batters later, Santos cleared the bases with a triple into center field to give Union a 7-2 lead.
Union added two more runs in the bottom of the third. With runners on second and third, a fielding error saw Sheeran reach base and sophomore
Kyle Zaslaw race home. In the next at-bat, senior
Dan Choate scored on a wild pitch for Union's final run of the game.
Hobart scored their final run of the day on a sac fly in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-3 game.
First-year
Alex Oppenheimer got the start and let up one hit before exiting the game. Junior
Bryce Fournier pitched the remainder of the seven-inning game to earn his first win of the season. Fournier allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits, and struck out six.
Union is back in action tomorrow with a Liberty League doubleheader against Ithaca College. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Shuttleworth Park.
