Softball Falters at Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Union College softball opened 2023 Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon against the Ithaca College Bombers. The Dutchwomen dropped both games of the double header 8-0 in five innings. Senior Karson Saunders went 2-4 from the plate with a single and a double. Classmate Olivia Valery and sophomore Nahnny Sobetzko each added a hit as well. 

Game One: Ithaca College 8, Union College 0 (5 innings)

Union found themselves with two runners on base in the opening half inning, but were unable to score after Saunders singled to put runners on the corners. In the bottom half of the first inning, Ithaca scored their first run and did not look back after that.

The Bombers scored three more runs in fourth inning and another four in the fifth inning to grab an 8-0 lead after five innings, and winning 8-0 in game one of the afternoon twin bill.

Sophomore Melody Kappel (3-3) was tabbed with the loss, throwing four innings of action. First-year Riley Jahnle made an appearance in relief in the fifth inning as well.

Game Two: Ithaca College 8, Union College 0 (5 innings)

The home team continued their hot play, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning and held Union to two hits on their way to a second 8-0 win over the Dutchwomen. Sobetzko and Valery each had a hit in the game two loss for Union.

Senior Amanda Granato (2-5) was credited with the loss in 3.2 innings of work for Union. Sophomore Autumn Duff came in, in the fourth inning and struck out one batter.

Union will look to bounce back from today's losses tomorrow, Sunday April 16, as they play host to Liberty League opponent RIT at Alexander Field. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
