Union Falls to Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team (12-15, 4-7 Liberty League) dropped an 11-1 decision in the opening game of the series against Vassar College (17-13, 4-6 Liberty League) Friday afternoon at Prentiss Field.

Junior Kobe Mentzer scored the lone run for Union, an inside-the-park homerun, for his fourth homerun of the year.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, Vassar extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third.  The Brewers put the game out of reach in the sixth inning with seven hits in the frame to make it an 11-0 game.

Mentzer broke the shutout bid in the top of the eighth. With two outs on the board, Mentzer swung on the fifth pitch he saw, and capitalized on his speed for an inside-the-park home run.

Sophomore Chris Suter fell to 4-2 on the season after pitching 5.1 inning and allowing 11 runs, 10 earned, on 13 hits, and three strikeouts. Junior Kyle Patlove pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and one walk with a pair of strikeouts.

Union looks to bounce back tomorrow with the conclusion of the regular season series against Vassar. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon at Shuttleworth Park.
