SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team closed out the regular season on Friday afternoon with Senior Day at the Union Tennis Courts, falling to ITA #38 Vassar College by an 8-1 score in a Liberty League matchup.
Union (9-6, 5-3 Liberty League), which has already clinched a spot in the conference tournament, will have to wait until the end of the weekend to see where the team will finish in the conference standings. Union currently sits in fourth place in the league and will finish in either third or fourth depending on other results this weekend.
Vassar (10-5, 6-1 Liberty League), which is ranked 38th nationally and 15th in the region by the ITA, clinched no worse than second place in the conference standings with one match remaining.
Union grabbed one point in doubles play, with senior
Marilena Karadimou and junior
Gracie Nicol posting an impressive 8-3 win over Erin McCusker and Sofie Shen at the top flight. Despite that victory, Union went into singles play down by a 2-1 score.
Singles play did not go the way of the home team, with the Brewers winning all six matches in straight sets. Nicol put up a great fight against McCusker, who is ranked 21st regionally, falling one break short in each set in a 6-4, 7-5 second-singles defeat. Karadimou also almost forced a supertiebreaker against Macey Dowd at the top flight, coming a break short in the second set of a 6-1, 7-5 loss.
Friday's match was the final home competition for Union's four seniors: Karadimou,
Hallie Katzman,
Rayna Katzman and
Lichuan Xiong.
While Union doesn't yet know its opponent, the team knows that it will take part in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament on Thursday in Ithaca, N.Y. Check UnionAthletics.com early next week for a full postseason preview.
