SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team closed out the 2022-23 regular season on Sunday morning, falling by an 8-1 score to ITA #34 Skidmore College in Liberty League action at the Wilton YMCA.
Despite the loss, Union (7-8, 4-4 Liberty League) had already locked in the fifth seed in next week's Liberty League Tournament. Fifth-seeded Union will take on fourth-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the first round on Friday afternoon in Ithaca.
In doubles play, junior
Dimitris Binopoulos and sophomore
Ben Jacobs put up a good fight against Brendan Jimenez and Nika Mori, ranked 12th in the region by the ITA, in an 8-5 first-doubles defeat.
Sophomore
Ian Schunk earned the lone win for Union in fifth-singles action, taking the first set in a tiebreaker and then outlasting Kyle Lundberg in a supertiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, (10-6).
Binopoulos and senior
Thomas McGuire both fell in supertiebreakers as well on the day, with both players taking the first sets before coming up just short. Binopoulos dropped a 5-7, 6-3, (10-3) match to Sergiu Celebidachi at the second flight, while McGuire was knocked off by Jude Ogilvie at sixth singles, 4-6, 6-2, (10-8).
