Sobetzko Homers in Split with Russell Sage

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore Nahnny Sobetzko was excellent at the plate including a two-run home run in game one to help Union College Softball earn a split against Russell Sage College on Tuesday afternoon from Alexander Field. Union earned a walked off in game one, 6-5, before dropping game two, 8-5.

Sobetzko batted 4-6 in the twin bill with two RBI and a home run. Senior Karson Saunders went 4-8 in both games with an RBI, two runs, and four singles in the pair of games.

Game One: Union College 6, Russell Sage 5

In game one the visitors opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Russell Sage scored on an RBI single to grab a 1-0 lead after one inning. Union jumped in front for the first time in the bottom of the third inning.

Following back to back hits from sophomore Riley Callahan and Saunders, classmate Olivia Valery ripped her second double of the afternoon into left center field. She scored both Callahan and Saunders in the process for a 2-1 lead for Union.

The home team extended their lead to two, after Saunders singled and scored senior Hartnett from second base. Union continued to tack on to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. First-year Ellie Wintringer singled through the left side to open the inning. Sobetzko then launched a home run over the left field fence to give Union a 5-1 lead.

The Gators did not go away quietly, with a four-run rally in the top of the seventh inning to pull themselves even at 5-5 after three hits in the inning. Union then batted in the bottom half of the inning looking for a win.

Callahan singled up the middle to kick off the inning. Saunders then singled and advanced to second to put runners on second and third. Valery then walked to load the bases with no outs. Wintringer then with the bases loaded hit a sac fly to center field and scored Callahan to help Union to a 6-5 walk off win in game one.

Senior Amanda Granato (4-7) earned her fourth win of the season with a complete game by throwing seven innings of work with three earned runs and a strike out.
