SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College softball team dropped the first game of a scheduled doubleheader against Liberty League opponent St. Lawrence, on Sunday afternoon from Alexander Field. Union lost game one 5-4, and game two was postponed due to rain.
Sophomore
Nahnny Sobetzko led the way for Union, batting 2-4 with a home run and three RBI. Senior
Olivia Valery also added two hits and an RBI for Union
Game One: St. Lawrence 5, Union 4
St. Lawrence jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the game after a pair of runs in back to back innings to grab control of the game. The Saints scored two runs in the opening inning, after three walks in the inning and one hit, they led 2-0.
The top of the second inning the Saints extended their lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the inning off of two hits.
Union cut into the St. Lawrence lead in the bottom of the second inning. Sobetzko batted with one out and for the second time this season she launched a solo home run over the left field fence. Union trailed 4-1.
The Saints added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning, and scored the eventual game winner, giving them a 5-1 lead.
Union kicked off a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior
Amanda Granato singled to right field to open the scoring. Senior
Karson Saunders batted with one out in the inning and doubled to right center field and advanced Granato to third in the process. Valery singled back up the middle and scored Granato, cutting the lead to 5-2.
Sobetzko added to her great day with a two RBI single up the middle scoring Saunders and Valery, making it 5-4 Union. Union's rally would end there and they would fall in game one 5-4 to St. Lawrence.
Granato (5-8) shouldered the loss for Union, throwing four innings and allowing four runs. Sophomore
Autumn Duff pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits.
Game two of this doubleheader was postponed due to rain, and will be made up at a later date.
Union will continue Liberty League play and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, May 6, from Alexander Field as they welcome the University of Rochester to Schenectady for a doubleheader.
