AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – A ninth-inning rally fell short as the Union College baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision in game three against St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park.
Senior
Jono Santos tallied his eighth homerun of the season and 15
th of his Union career with a two-run blast in the third inning. Santos is now third in Union's career homerun list and sits in sole possession of fourth-place in single-season homeruns with eight.
Union opened the scoring in the second inning. With runners on the corners, senior
Dan Choate lined a single through the left side to score first-year
Liam McIlroy. One inning later, Union extended the lead to 3-0 after Santos drove a two-run homerun deep into center field.
The Saints struck back in the fifth inning with four runs to take a 4-3 lead. St. Lawrence extended the lead with an RBI single in the sixth and an RBI single in the seventh.
Union closed the gap in the eighth inning. After back-to-back singles by Choate and senior
Jack Milone to put runners on first and second, senior
Jack Davis launched a triple deep into right field to score two runs.
The Saints added one final run on an RBI single in the ninth to take a 7-5 advantage.
Union loaded the bases in the ninth. A groundout by junior
Thomas Parisi brought home Union's sixth run, but the rally fell short as the Saints recorded the final out one batter later.
Sophomore
Aidan McGee pitched six innings and surrendered five runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Sophomore
Alex Erickson allowed one hit and one run in 0.2 innings while senior
Harry Azadian pitched 0.2 scoreless innings. Senior
Jason Goldblum closed out the game with the final 1.2 innings allowing one run on one hit, one walk and a strikeout.
