Women's Soccer Settles for 1-1 Draw with Oneonta

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team controlled play for much of the evening, but some bad luck around the net forced the Garnet Chargers to settle for a 1-1 tie with SUNY Oneonta in non-conference action at College Park Field on Wednesday night.

Union (2-1-1) hit two posts and a crossbar on the evening, as the home team dominated possession to the tune of an 18-4 edge in shots and a 12-0 advantage in corners. First-year Delaney McNinch scored the lone goal of the game for Union.

Union had the run of play for much of the opening half, holding more than 60 percent of the possession, outshooting Oneonta 9-2, and taking the only eight corners of the frame. Despite that, however, the Red Dragons scored against the run of play in the 28th minute when Keira Dashnow lofted a shot over sophomore Rachel Berliner and just under the crossbar to put the visitors ahead.

But Union continued to press and finally notched the equalizer in the 40th minute. A free kick into the box by sophomore Anne Pearl was headed off the post by senior Amanda Sgueglia, but McNinch was there to direct home the carom for her second goal of the season.

Sgueglia's post was the second piece of woodwork hit by Union in the opening half. In the 23rd minute, first-year Ashley Sheldon had an attempt from 25 yards out carom off the same left post to keep the game scoreless.

Union had numerous chances to take the lead in the second half, but just missed on multiple opportunities. Sophomore Vanessa Jorgensen nearly scored the go-ahead tally in the 79th minute, but her shot hit off the crossbar. Pearl also just missed on a free kick from distance in the 90th minute, with the ball just sailing over the bar.

Berliner made one save and allowed one goal in the first half, while first-year Maya Koster made one stop during a scoreless second stanza. Despite having the ball in Oneonta's defensive end for the much of the night, Olivia Forbes needed to make just one save for the Red Dragons.

Union will return to action on Friday night with a 7 p.m. match at Utica University.
