Football Moves to 3-0 in Friday Night Home Opener Victory

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College football team scored 21 points in a 5:56 span late in the second quarter en route to a 34-7 nonconference victory over Springfield College Friday night at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

The win was the first for Union in a 7:00 p.m. home kickoff since September 10, 2005, a 35-7 win over Springfield.

The Union offense put up strong numbers again with 445 yards of total offense with 256 through the air and 189 on the ground. Senior Donovan Pacatte went 18-for-27 and 256 yards and a touchdown while adding 34 rushing yards on seven carries and a score. Classmate Michael Fiore was efficient with 67 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Junior Jonathan Anderson led all players with 90 yards on 14 carries. Junior Tommy Leonard registered his second touchdown of the season on a 21-yard reception to help lead all receivers with 88 yards.

Junior Max Gluck went a perfect 4-for-4 on PATs and converted a pair of field goals from 40 yards and 25 yards, respectively.

The Union defense limited the top rushing offense in NCAA Division III to only 150 yards of offense, all rushing. Senior Cole DaSilva led the defensive efforts with nine tackles, seven solo, as well as 1.5 tackles for a loss. Fellow senior Nathan Sullivan racked up five tackles and the game's lone interception with a 19-yard return. Senior Ethan VanderBrink had a solo sack and was responsible for a total of 2.5 tackles for a combined 12-yard loss.

After a scoreless first quarter, Union scored three times in a span of 5:56 to go up 21-0 to end the half. Deep in Springfield territory, Pacatte found Fiore for the handoff three straight rushes to take a 7-0 lead. Three snaps into the following drive by the Pride, Sullivan intercepted Jacob Silvester at the Springfield 49-yard line and ran it back 19 yards. Pacatte found junior Robbie Tolbert for a 23-yard reception to bring the ball to Springfield's seven-yard line. Two straight rushes by Anderson set up Pacatte on the two-yard line, and the quarterback kept the ball for a two-yard rush and the score.

With a 1:09 left to play in the half, the visiting Pride called a timeout, which was all Union needed. Pacatte found Leonard on a 36-yard reception right out of the timeout and connected again one snap later for the 21-yard touchdown.

Springfield broke Union's shutout streak with 9:26 to play in the third quarter. After several big stops by the visitors, senior Andrew Lau entered the game and sent a 41-yard punt back to the Springfield 36-yard line. Joe Maurer ran it back 64 yards for the touchdown. Union responded on the following drive with a 40-yard field goal by Gluck. The junior kicker converted again on the next Union drive, nailing a 25-yard field goal to make it a 27-7 game.

The hosts added one final tally early in the fourth quarter. A pair of rushes by Anderson setup Union only four yards out from the Springfield end zone. Fiore scampered across the last four yards for his second tally of the game and his sixth of the season.

Union continues the homestand with the final nonconference matchup of the regular season on Saturday, September 23 against Montclair State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
