Field Hockey Falters on the Road at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team received goals from three different players, but it was not enough to pull out a victory as the team dropped a 4-3 non-conference contest to Hartwick College on Wednesday afternoon at Wright Stadium.

Junior Grace Goddard, sophomore Megan Dorsey and first-year Maddie Greco all scored for Union (3-3), but the team could not come away with the victory despite coming back to tie the score at two in the second period and three in the third frame. Danielle Hand led Hartwick (4-2) with two goals and an assist.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard first just 3:22 into the contest and recorded a 6-1 edge in shots to hold that one-goal lead after 15 minutes. The home team added to its lead with 5:08 remaining in the second period, but Union stormed back with two goals in 1:11 from Goddard and Greco to tie the game headed into halftime. First-year Molly Halliday recorded an assist on Greco's goal, her team-leading ninth point of the season.

Hartwick regained the lead 3:54 into the third period but Union again had an answer, this time from Dorsey less than nine minutes later to knot the score at three. However, Hand delivered a backbreaker with just 24 seconds in the third quarter to put the Hawks back up by a goal headed into the final frame, and the Garnet Chargers managed just one shot in the final frame to suffer the loss.

The Hawks finished the game with a 15-10 edge in shots. Sophomore Sophie Brady made four saves and conceded two goals in the first half, while first-year Marion Stuntz stopped two of the four on-target attempts she faced in the second half. Ashley Luppens and Amanda Klopper combined to make six saves for Hartwick.

Union will look to return to the win column with a return to Frank Bailey Field on Saturday, as the team begins Liberty League play against Ithaca College beginning at 5 p.m.
