CANTON, N.Y. – First-year
Maddie Greco scored the first two goals of the game to lead the Union College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.
Union (4-5, 1-1 Liberty League) was in a groove offensively on Saturday, firing 28 shots toward the St. Lawrence net. Greco provided all the offense the Garnet Chargers needed on the day, recording her second multi-goal game of the season.
At the other end of the field, first-year
Marion Stuntz played all 60 minutes for the visitors and picked up her second victory of the season, making seven saves.
The teams combined for seven shots during a scoreless opening frame, with Stuntz making four saves to keep the Saints off the board. Seizing on that momentum, Union dominated play in the second stanza, outshooting SLU 10-0 and scoring once to take the lead for good. The Garnet Chargers took five shots over the first 2:27 of the period, with Greco eventually finding the net from classmate
Rachel Ostiguy to put the visitors in front.
Greco made it a two-goal game in the 35th minute with an unassisted tally. The Saints got one back with 1:23 remaining to make it a 2-1 lead headed into the fourth, but Stuntz made one saves and Union outshot St. Lawrence 9-2 in the final frame to preserve the victory.
Union will return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference matchup at Morrisville State College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
