Rough Shooting Night Leads to a Men's Hoops Loss at SLU

CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's basketball team could not overcome a rough shooting night on Friday as the Garnet Chargers fell to St. Lawrence University by a 66-45 score in Liberty League action at Burkman Gymnasium.

Union (7-6, 2-5 Liberty League) shot just 23.6 percent (13 of 55) from the field on the night, with first-year Matthew Garside posting the team's top scoring output with just eight points. St. Lawrence (8-4, 4-2 Liberty League), meanwhile, shot 45.5 percent (25 of 55) from the floor and received a game-high 21 points from Aidan Macaulay.

The shooting woes started early for the Garnet Chargers, as Union hit only 4-of-26 shots (15.4 percent) from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The visitors missed 11 of their first 12 shots as St. Lawrence jumped out to a 15-5 lead eight minutes into the contest, and Union got back with six after four straight points from senior Connor Cepiel before a 13-3 SLU run extended the lead to 16. A brief 5-0 spurt to end the half made it a 28-17 Saints lead headed into the break.

After trading baskets to start the second half, SLU blew the game open with a 15-0 run soon after, taking a 45-19 advantage after a Macaulay three with 14:01 left. The lead grew to as many as 27 later in the period before Union outscored SLU 20-14 the rest of the way.

Union will return to action tomorrow when the team makes the short drive to Potsdam to take on Clarkson University at 2 p.m.
