Dominant Second Stanza Leads Women's Hoops Past Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team outscored Clarkson University 22-5 in the decisive second period to take control of the contest and roll to a 64-48 victory over the Golden Knights in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

Junior Jenna Forman led three Garnet Chargers in double figures with a game-high 15 points, one off her career high, and also came one rebound short of her first collegiate double-double. Junior Jelena Perovic recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and game-high 11 rebounds to go with four assists, two steals and a block. Senior Kennedy Clark also reached double figures for Union (5-10, 4-4 Liberty League) with 11 points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting, including a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc.

Cassidy Dumont and Raelin Burns scored a team-leading 13 points apiece for Clarkson (3-11, 1-6 Liberty League).

Union had one of its best shooting days of the season in the victory, connecting on 48.0 percent (24 of 50) of its shots from the field and 6-of-9 attempts from long range. The defense also limited Clarkson to 30.2 percent (13 of 43) shooting on the afternoon.

Union dominated play defensively in the opening half, limiting Clarkson to 1-of-10 shooting in both the first and second frames. After a 3-of-10 effort in the first period, the Garnet Chargers hit 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) of their shots – and three of their four long-range attempts – on the way to a commanding 22-5 second stanza.

The visitors started off the second period with seven straight points, getting a Clark three and back-to-back jumpers from Perovic. After four Clarkson points, Union rattled off 13 straight points in the span of five minutes, with junior Emma Riley leading the way with six points. While a Clarkson free throw with a minute left ended the scoreless stretch, Union still went into halftime with a 30-13 advantage.

Perovic led all players with 11 points and six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes, as Union shot 45.8 percent (11 of 24) from the field and held Clarkson to 2-of-20 (10.0 percent) shooting. The Union lead would have been greater if not for the Golden Knights' 8-of-12 effort from the charity stripe.

Both teams decided to score in third quarter, with the home team outscoring Union 24-16 to get back within single digits headed to the fourth. The visitors built up a game-high 19-point lead on two occasions early in the period after free throws by Perovic and senior Grace Enselek, but a subsequent 10-3 Clarkson run decreased the deficit to 12 at the midway point of the frame. Forman scored seven of Union's last nine points of the period to keep the visitors ahead by double figures.

The teams traded points early in the final frame before a Clark three and a layup by sophomore Grace Arcoleo built the Union lead back up to 13 (55-42) with 7:05 on the clock. The visitors were content to trade baskets the rest of the way in cruising to their fourth conference win of the season.

Union will return home for its next four conference contests, beginning on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Vassar College at Viniar Athletic Center.
