SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Eleven different players had at least one basket as the Union College women's basketball team cruised past Bard College by a 62-34 score in Liberty League action on Tuesday evening at Viniar Athletic Center.
Sophomore
Jelena Perovic led a balanced attack for Union (4-9, 3-3 Liberty League) with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field to go with six rebounds. First-year
Casey Weeren chipped in eight points in 10 minutes and junior
Jenna Forman scored six points with a team-high eight caroms and two blocks.
Shirley Dong netted a game-high 11 points and Ella Perreault grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds for Bard (4-8, 0-6 Liberty League).
Union shot 43.1 percent (25 of 58) from the field in the victory, including a 5-of-11 mark from long range, and limited Bard to 13-of-58 shooting (22.4 percent) from the field.
The Garnet Chargers held the Raptors to 3-of-17 shooting in the opening frame, as the home team jumped out to a 10-6 lead after 10 minutes. The teams went more than four minutes without a point before junior
Emma Riley finally broke the ice with 5:49 remaining and, after with a Perovic bucket and two from first-year
Morgan Schultz, Union had an 8-2 lead that was never relinquished.
Union found its groove in the second period, hitting 8-of-14 shots from the field and outscoring Bard by a 22-13 margin. The home team started the frame on a 12-3 run, helped by a pair of threes from sophomore
Grace Arcoleo. An 8-0 stint later in the period opened up a 32-17 advantage before a last-minute bucket brought the Raptors within 13 at the break.
The third quarter was the most evenly played of the night, with neither team scoring more than three consecutive points for the entirety of the 10 minutes. Senior
Kennedy Clark scored a game-high six points for Union in the period, in which the Garnet Chargers used a 14-12 scoring edge to take a 46-31 lead to the fourth.
Union asserted itself again in the final frame, outscoring Bard by a 16-3 margin to finish off the victory and limiting the visitors to 1-of-10 shooting from the field. Weeren singlehandedly outscored Bard 6-2 in the frame, with five teammates adding two points apiece.
Union will continue its busy week with a trip to the North Country this weekend, beginning with a Friday matchup at St. Lawrence University beginning at 5:30 p.m.
