Men's Soccer Gets Past Elmira in Non-Conference Finale, 2-1

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Second-half goals by first-year Owen Everett and senior Wyatt Goldfisher were enough to lift the Union College men's soccer team past Elmira College in the Garnet Chargers' non-conference finale on Tuesday afternoon at Elmira Campus Field.

Everett and Goldfisher combined for eight of the 15 shots taken by Union (4-4-2) on the day and both were rewarded with goals. Junior Grant Della Rocca and first-year Gio Capellino recorded assists as well in the victory.

After a scoreless first half in which Union outshot the home team by a 7-2 margin, it took Union only 96 seconds to take a lead in the second half. Della Rocca played a ball into the box for Everett, who took a touch before delivering a left-footed shot across his body into the right-side netting for his third goal of the season, tying him for the team lead.

Elmira (3-5-2) drew even in the 53rd minute on a perfectly placed free kick by Ole Esselmann, and the game remained tied for more than 20 minutes before Union went ahead for good. Goldfisher and Capellino combined to win possession in the midfield and start a break down the field, and Capellino eventually got the ball on the right side of the box. The first-year got by a defender and passed in front for a right-footed finish from Goldfisher for the match-winning tally.

The Garnet Chargers did not allow a shot the rest of the way to preserve the win, finishing the afternoon with a 15-4 edge in attempts and an 8-2 advantage in on-target shots. First-year Jackson Magee made one save to pick up the win, while Asher Ellis made six stops for the Soaring Eagles.

Union starts the bulk of Liberty League play on Saturday, kicking off a stretch of eight straight conference games at home against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at 2 p.m. at College Park Field.
