SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior
Sam Friedman and first-year
Addison MacDonald scored second-half goals and sophomore
Maya Koster made four saves to lead Union College past Hamilton College by a 2-1 score in non-conference women's soccer action on a rainy Sunday afternoon at College Park Field.
Friedman and MacDonald scored 19 minutes apart in the second half to help Union (8-2-4) to its first victory over Hamilton (5-5-2) since 2010 and extend the team's unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1).
After a scoreless first half, the game opened up considerably in the second frame. Friedman opened the scoring in the 59th minute thanks to a great through ball from sophomore
Ashley Sheldon, which Friedman tapped past Hamilton keeper Nieve Tonna and dribbled into an empty net for her third goal of the year.
Union thought it took a two-goal lead in the 78th minute when sophomore
Hannah Sams drilled an indirect free kick into the net, but the referee ruled that the keeper had been interfered with. The second goal came for real less than a minute later, when MacDonald got her head on a corner kick from junior
Vanessa Jorgensen at the back post and deposited her first collegiate goal.
The comfortable advantage lasted less than two minutes, however, as Isabel Harvey took a long ball and got past the defense before putting a shot on goal that Koster got a hand on but could not keep from trickling into the net.
Hamilton continued to apply pressure on the Union defense after the goal, but Koster did not allow another shot past her to secure the win. The Continentals' best chance at a tie came with under three minutes remaining, when Maddie Ledbury took a shot from the left wing that short-hopped Koster, who both made the difficult save and held onto the ball to prevent a rebound opportunity.
The teams combined for 15 shots during a back-and-forth opening half, with the goalies combining to make eight saves to keep the match scoreless at the break. Koster made several key stops for the Garnet Chargers, including a full-extension dive to get a hand on a Harvey shot ticketed for the right-side netting in the 29th minute. Union's best chance came in the 36th minute, when a 25-yard attempt by senior
Grace Penna just stayed over the crossbar.
Hamilton finished the match with a 14-12 edge in shots and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Union will kick off a string of five straight Liberty League contests to conclude the regular season next weekend, beginning with a Homecoming and Family Weekend matchup with Ithaca College on Friday at 4 p.m. at College Park Field.
