POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Junior
Megan Dorsey played a role in all three Union College scores with a goal and two helpers as the Union field hockey team reached the 10-win plateau for the third straight season with a 3-0 Liberty League victory over Vassar College on Friday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
Dorsey scored once and added a pair of assists to pace Union (10-4, 3-1 Liberty League), which remains in a first-place tie with Ithaca College with three conference games to go. Sophomores
Reese Fendelet and
Rachel Ostiguy also scored for the Garnet Chargers, who have won a season-high four games in a row.
Chances were limited during the first period of play, with Union not taking its first shot until the 10:31 mark. But the first goal of the afternoon came soon after, with Fendelet taking a pass from Dorsey and scoring her sixth of the year with 1:06 left in the frame.
It did not take Union long to increase its lead in the second stanza. Dorsey scored off a penalty corner insert by sophomore
Maddie Greco just 36 seconds into the period to doubled the Union advantage. The visitors took the only five shots of the stanza to take its two-goal lead into halftime.
The Garnet Chargers again held Vassar (3-11, 1-3 Liberty League) without a shot in the third period and scored the only goal of the frame, with Ostiguy doing the honors for the fourth time this season in the 36th minute.
The visitors finished the afternoon with a commanding 14-3 edge in shots, with junior
Sophie Brady needing to make only one save over the first three quarters. First-year
Tess Parker played the fourth frame and did not face an on-target shot.
Union will return to action on Sunday, when the team closes out Homecoming and Family Weekend with a big Liberty League matchup against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning at noon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
