Field Hockey Clinches Top-Two Seed with 3-0 Win over Saints

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team clinched a top-two seed in the Liberty League Tournament for the first time ever and won its program-record fifth conference game of the season with a dominating 3-0 victory over St. Lawrence University on Friday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

With the victory, Union (12-4, 5-1 Liberty League) remains in a first-place tie with Ithaca College and can finish no lower than second in the Liberty League standings with one conference game remaining. The team's 12 wins are now tied for the third-most in a single-season in program history, while the five conference wins surpass the previous record that was first set in 2007 and matched on three other occasions.

Sophomore Maddie Greco led the Garnet Chargers with three points, notching her 15th goal of the year and adding an assist. Senior Shaelyn Kelley and sophomore Reese Fendelet also scored for the home team, while senior Kristen O'Shea picked up an assist.

Union dominated St. Lawrence (5-9, 2-4 Liberty League) in all areas on Friday, posting a 23-3 edge in shots and keeping the Saints without a shot for nearly 50 minutes to start the day. The home team also earned 18 penalty corners without conceding one.

Greco got the scoring started in the ninth minute, getting her own rebound and notching her 15th tally of the season, moving her into a tie for sixth on the school's single-season list.

Union added another goal less than three minutes later on the team's sixth corner of the opening period. The ball was inserted to junior Megan Dorsey at the top of the arc, and she dished to the left side for O'Shea. The senior then fed a ball perfectly into the middle of the crease for Fendelet to one-time for her seventh goal of the season.

Greco earned the assist on the Garnet Chargers' third goal of the opening half, weaving past SLU defenders into the arc before dropping the ball off to Kelley at the back post for the put-away, Kelley's fourth of the year. With her fourth helper of the year, Greco also moved into seventh place in single-season points with 34.

All three goalies saw action for Union on the afternoon. Junior Sophie Brady did not face a shot over the first 30 minutes to earn her 10th win of the year, while first-year Tess Parker also did not see a shot in the third. Sophomore Marion Stuntz made two saves and also got a defensive save from first-year Aislin Devaney to finish off the shutout.

Union will ride its six-game winning streak into Sunday's conference regular-season finale at Skidmore College, set for a 2 p.m. start in Saratoga Springs. The Garnet Chargers could earn a first-place finish with a win and an Ithaca College loss against St. Lawrence.
