Engelbert Nets a Hat Trick in Women's Hockey 3-0 Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - First-year Karianne Engelbert netted a hat trick in the Union College's women's ice hockey 3-0 win over Harvard, Friday afternoon.

Engelbert's three goals came in the first, second, and third period, marking the first hat trick of her career, and the first for Union since sophomore Emma Fulawka's hat trick in the 6-0 win over St. Michael's College on Jan. 1.

Union started strong, recording 16 shots compared to Harvard's seven in the first period. Engelbert's first goal came with 44 seconds left in the period when a pass from junior Stephanie Bourque set up senior Maren Friday, who fired the puck from the top of the circles into traffic, allowing Engelbert to redirect the puck into the right side of the net.

The Garnet Chargers maintained offensive pressure in the second period recording 15 shots to Harvard's 13. Engelbert scored her second goal of the night with just two minutes left in the period. Senior Paige Greco passed the puck back to senior Emma Hebert at the blue line, allowing Hebert to wind up and fire a shot on goal in which Engelbert was able to tip the puck into the net.

Engelbert completed her hat trick in the third period, capitalizing on a rebound that came out to the slot from sophomore Kendal Davidson's wrist shot.

Senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas delivered an outstanding performance in net making clutch saves and stopping 24 shots to secure her second shutout of the season. Matsoukas (5) is now just one shutout away from tying Shenae Lundberg (6) for first in career shutouts.

Women's hockey returns to action Saturday for their Cystic Fibrosis Awareness game against Dartmouth College. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm.
