Field Hockey Holds Off #18 Rochester in Thrilling 3-2 (2OT) Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year Maggie Monaghan scored with 2:35 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Union College field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 (2OT) victory over #18 University of Rochester in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

The victory is a big one for Union (7-4, 1-1 Liberty League), who was playing its third straight game against nationally ranked opposition and picked up its first win against a NFHCA ranked squad since defeating #16 William Smith College on October 10, 2008.

Monaghan's game-winner capped a very tense overtime that saw Union play shorthanded for more than 15 minutes due to yellow cards. The Garnet Chargers survived eight Rochester penalty corners in extra time and got two saves from junior Sophie Brady to keep the game tied and eventually get back to seven-on-seven play. After Brady made a stop on UR's 18th corner attempt of the day, Union came back the other way and Monaghan had a shot stopped by goalie Kara Houston. Less than a minute later, senior Shaelyn Kelley got the ball to the side of the Rochester net and Monaghan managed to flip the ball past Houston into the cage and set off a huge celebration.

Union had a pair of one-goal leads over the course of the day and never trailed against nationally ranked Rochester (9-2, 0-1 Liberty League). Senior Grace Goddard opened the scoring 1:55 before the end of the first period, taking the ball from the defensive midfield all the way to the top of the arc, where she fired a shot through a defender and Houston for her second tally of the year. Union outshot Rochester 6-1 in the opening frame.

Neither team scored in the second stanza despite the Yellow Jackets' 4-0 edge in shots. Brady made three stops in a three-minute span late in the period, and junior Kat Bruun made an incredible defensive save in the final minute when she batted Hannah Mehta's high-arcing shot out of midair just before the goal-line.

Mehta eventually tied the game in the final minute of the third quarter, but first-year Rowan Dapson got Union back on top with her first collegiate goal, firing a shot from the middle of the arc past Houston with 9:47 to go. Union held on for the next seven minutes before the visitors earned a penalty stroke with 2:27 remaining and Zoe Conomikes picked the top corner to tie the score and eventually send the game to overtime.

Rochester finished the day with a 17-12 edge in shots and took 18 corners to Union's six. Brady came up huge with 10 saves and Houston stopped eight shots for the visitors.

Union will get back to Liberty League action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at William Smith College
